Speed trailers are available at the request of civic organizations and community based associations as a tool to survey local neighborhood traffic speeds. These trailers are equipped with radar units, which detect and display the speed of passing vehicles via a LED display board mounted on the trailer. Vehicle speed data is collected and stored to help staff assess if speed control devices are warranted in a community.
Speed trailers do not take photographs of passing vehicles; rather, they:
Help to make drivers aware of their speed in comparison with the speed limit
Provide speed data for traffic engineers to determine applicable resolutions to abate speeding in neighborhoods
Aid in the planning of new roadway
