Benefits at a Glance
Medical Plans
In accordance with Section 16-212 of the Prince George’s County Code, the Prince George’s County Government offers health plans for the exclusive benefit of its employees and retirees. These include 2 Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan.

Dental, Prescription & Vision Plans
The County offers employees 2 types of dental plan options, a Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).
The County also offers a prescription and vision plans.

Life Insurance Programs
The County offers the following life insurance plans:
  • Basic life insurance for all eligible employees; and
  • Supplemental insurance for police officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency response technicians and deputy sheriffs;
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit (AD&D);
  • Extra Life Insurance (XLI) up to 4 times base pay to a specified maximum - may be purchased by employees.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)
The County offers 2 FSAs that allow employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for health care and/or dependent care expenses.

Long-term Disability (LTD) Insurance
The County offers all eligible employees 2 LTD insurance options. This plan integrates with the annual, sick and disability leave policies, the workers’ compensation program, Social Security and disability retirement benefits.

Voluntary Benefits
In addition to the core health benefit plans, employees can also enroll in a number of voluntary benefit plans:

Note: County retirees are not eligible to enroll in voluntary benefits plans.

Continuation of Benefits (COBRA)
Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), employees, retirees, their spouses and eligible dependent children who are enrolled in any County-sponsored health plan have the right to continue the health coverage, if a specified qualifying event has occurred.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The County provides free 24-hour counseling services to employees and eligible members of their household under its Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
