Lead Poisoning in Children
It is especially important for children who live or spend time in older buildings that may have peeling or chipping paint to get tested for lead. The Health Department's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program provides nursing case management to children with high blood lead levels. We also provide blood lead testing and screening to uninsured children and conduct an environmental lead assessment if a child's blood lead level is above 15 micro grams per deci liter (ug/dL).
Actually, all children between 6 months and 6 years of age should be checked for lead. While most children have blood lead tests as part of their regular care by a doctor or clinic, parents must be sure to remind their doctors to perform the test.
