The Recruitment, Examination and Classification Division provides a merit-based employment program for Prince George’s County Government and offers services that contribute to the improvement of the professional lives of County employees. The Division has three major components: Recruitment – Examination – Classification

The Recruitment area has the most direct contact with the public. Major activities include developing and implementing recruitment strategies, human resources forecasting, developing position descriptions and performance standards, and advertising for job openings for County departments and agencies.

The Examination area is responsible for receiving, tracking and evaluating job applications, administering skills assessments, pre-employment examinations, background verification processes, and employee interviewing and selection processes.

The Classification area is responsible for maintaining the County’s Classification Plan and Classification Specifications. The Classification Plan consists of approximately 575 classification titles within 260 class series. The official classification plan lists all class titles within their respective series in alphabetical order, the grades, appropriate salary schedule(s), class codes for information technology usage, official EEO designation and probationary period duration for each class of work. The Classification Plan is amended by legislative action and is officially changed by the County Council.

Each of the approximate 575 classification titles has an associated class specification. The specifications are intended to officially designate the nature and variety of work, provide examples of work, and provide required knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies, and minimum qualifications for each class of work.
