Children become available for adoption for a variety of reasons and adoption can bring a positive ending to a challenging situation and provides benefits to everyone involved. Although the majority of people who adopt are married couples, many single people choose to adopt as well. When you make the decision to adopt, the process may seem overwhelming. The Prince George’s County Department of Social Services recognizes this and has created a program which simplifies the steps as we guide you through every stage of the adoption.
Adoption is a procedure by which people legally assume the role of parents for a child(ren) who are not their biological child(ren). Adopted children become full members of the adopted household. All potential adoptive resource parents would need to meet the same licensing requirements that are set by the State of Maryland for a Foster parent. The legal responsibility of the agency ends when the court approves the adoption. However, this Agency will provide direct assistance or referral services when asked, even after the adoption is finalized through Post-Adoption Services.
Some families may need support services after an adoption to remain successful. Such needs usually change over time, along with the child’s development and the development of the family as a whole. The effort is aimed at protecting adoptive placements from the risk of disruption and to provide much needed supports to families and children.
