Volunteer

Anyone wishing to pursue volunteer work with the Prince George's County Animal Services Division (ASD) should attend a volunteer orientation, which is hosted biweekly. Once you have attended orientation you must contact the volunteer coordinator to set up one on one and to turn in your application. The approval process normally takes 2 weeks to complete.

We have many areas where volunteers are needed, such as dog walking, cat socialization, cleaning kennels, small mammal care (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters), reptile care, laundry, dishes, administrative duties, stuffing treats, and so much more!

How Can I Become an Animal Volunteer?

  1. Attend in-person orientation at the facility
  2. Schedule a one-on-one appointment with the volunteer coordinator to turn in your application.

Complete, sign, and return this Volunteer Application and Agreement form.

Volunteer work is available to students in half-day shifts on Monday - Friday between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and for adults (18 or over) from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., 7 days a week.

Students

ASD provides opportunities for students to fulfill their community service requirement for graduation. Any student, 14 years of age or older, who is interested in volunteer work at the Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center, must complete an application. Student volunteers perform routine cleaning assignments such as washing food bowls and water buckets, helping with laundry, or cleaning windows. They may also have clerical tasks such as stuffing envelopes or labeling documents. Students are not allowed to work with the animals in the kennels due to the liability to the County should they be injured.

Adults

Adult volunteers (at least 18 years of age) wishing to work with the animals must complete a volunteer application and attend a scheduled 1-hour orientation followed by a tour.

Court Order

ASD also accepts court-ordered community service volunteers. This is coordinated through Parole and Probation, the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, and the State of Maryland.

For questions, call 301-780-7200, option 6.
