Q. What is an abandoned vehicle?

A. An abandoned vehicle is any motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer that is inoperable and left on public property for more than 48 hours, or on private property for more than 48 hours without the consent of the owner or person in control of the property. Please see Md. Code, TR § 25-201   for more details.

Q. What happens to a vehicle that is reported abandoned?

A. A notice is affixed to the vehicle 48 hours before impoundment procedures. After 48 hours, the vehicle is towed to a County approved tow lot.

Q. How do I know where my vehicle was towed?

A. All impounded abandoned vehicles are reported to the County police dispatch. Contact 311 for information about an impounded vehicle.

Q. What happens if I don’t reclaim my impounded vehicle?

A. Failure to reclaim the vehicle within 21 days from the impound date will result in the waiver by the owner or secured party of all rights, title, and interest in the vehicle.

Q. How do I file a complaint about an abandoned vehicle or check the status on an existing complaint?

A. You can file a service request with 311 (County Click) or call 301-883-4748 Monday-Friday 7am-7pm

Q. Where do I report an abandoned vehicle parked on private property (driveway, backyard, etc.)

A. Contact 311 County Click or The Department of Permitting, Inspection and Enforcement (DPIE).

Q. How do I find out how much I owe?

A. Contact the tow company that impounded for towing and storage fees. Fees cannot exceed County Code mandate. See section 26-142.14 https://princegeorgescountymd.gov

Q. What is the time frame to have an abandoned vehicle towed?

A. A vehicle must be in violation and tagged for 48 hours before the vehicle can be towed.

Q. How do I appeal a tow if I feel it was done in error?

A. All towed vehicle owners and/or secured parties will receive certified mail notification of the impoundment. You will receive a request for Show Cause Hearing within the information. Simply follow the instructions and mail to the address on the notification.
