The Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Unit (CARU) investigates fatal and critical injury collisions in the County. CARU officers are highly trained and skilled investigators. Once on the scene of a collision, their responsibilities are many. Investigators respond to the hospital, photograph the scene, collect and preserve evidence, evaluate road markings, take statements, inspect involved vehicles, measure the scene, sketch a diagram, impound vehicles and make next of kin notification.
The post scene investigation entails many other tasks that may require completion. These tasks include a more detailed inspection of involved vehicles, obtaining a search warrant to remove and evaluate data from the Airbag Control Module / Event Data Recorder, re-examining the scene, completing numerous reports, evaluating the dynamics of the crash and the use of gathered information to determine minimum speed.
