Health and Lifestyle Training Diabetes Prevention Program (HALT DPP)

Did you know that 1 out of 3 American adults has a condition called prediabetes? If you are overweight, there's a higher chance of having prediabetes. Around 70% of adults in the U.S. and Prince George's County are considered overweight. Preventing prediabetes is important to avoid the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and that's where HALT comes in.

What is HALT?

HALT stands for Health and Lifestyle Training, and it's an online program that helps people learn how to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. It lasts for 26 sessions, and a coach will guide you throughout the year.

How can you join the program?

To be part of HALT

  • You need to be 18 years or older
  • Overweight (having a Body Mass Index of 25 or higher, or 23 or higher for Asian-Americans)
  • Not diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and 
  • Not currently pregnant.

You should also meet one of these requirements:

  • Had a prediabetes blood test result in the past year with specific ranges.
  • Had a previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes (if you were pregnant).
  • Got a high-risk result on the CDC prediabetes risk test.
  • Hemoglobin A1C of 5.7-6.4 or
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: 140-199 mg/dl or
  • Fasting Glucose Test: 100-125 mg/dl

Program Schedule:

Dates: April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025

  • Location: Online (you can use your cellphone, tablet, or computer).
  • The website link and instructions for the mobile app will be sent to you before the program starts.
