Mission

The mission of the Office of Law is to:

Provide the County government and its agencies, boards and commissions with cost effective, quality representation in all matters requiring legal advice and review

Diligently and fairly enforce the civil laws of the County, and to be responsible and proactive in providing legal services and advice to our clients

Overview

The County Attorney is the agency director who manages and oversees all areas of operations and provides supervision and guidance to the staff. The Office of Law is comprised of three divisions, each of which is supervised by a Deputy County Attorney. The divisions are:

  • Litigation
  • Transactional
  • Government Operations

Divisions

Litigation Division

The Litigation Division defends the County and its agencies, officials, and employees against all lawsuits in both State and Federal courts. Types of cases include personal injury, motor vehicle torts, other tort claims, professional liability, employment discrimination, contract disputes, workers' compensation, collections, subrogation, and forfeitures.  This division also provides representation to the Department of Social Services in Child in Need of Assistance and Termination of Parental Rights cases.

Transactional Division 

The Transactional Division reviews and drafts complex contracts and real estate transactions and handles treasury and tax issues.

Government Operations Division 

The Government Operations Division handles administrative hearings, code enforcement cases, providing legal opinions and advice, reviewing and drafting legislation, and responding to the Maryland Public Information Act requests, and reviewing appointments to County boards and commissions
