Public Swimming Pool Concerns
Public Swimming Pool Concerns
1. Do I need a Health Department license for a residential swimming pool?
A Health Department license is not required for a residential pool. However, a permit from the Department of Permitting, Inspection and Enforcement is required to construct a residential pool.
2. Do I need a permit to replace equipment in my public swimming pool?
You need to apply for a plan review permit for any equipment changes except when replacing “like for like’ equipment (replacement with the same equipment).
3. How often are public swimming pools inspected?
Swimming pools are inspected at least once a year. Seasonal swimming pools receive a pre-opening inspection and are inspected periodically during the season. Year-round pools receive periodic inspections throughout the year. If a complaint is received by the Health Department an investigation is conducted.
4. Are pools required to have a lifeguard on duty?
There are exceptions to having a lifeguard on duty at a public swimming pool. The Prince George’s County Code allows pools located at a hotel, motel or health clubs that are less than 2500 square feet an exemption from requiring a life guard. There are specific requirements that must be met in order to receive the exemption such as signage that must be posted, controlled entry, and personnel on site to manage the pool chemistry.
