Recognizes Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett
Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is praised as a key scientist leading the effort to solve the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Corbett, a viral immunologist, is a research fellow and scientific lead at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. She is the scientific lead for Dr. Barney Graham’s coronavirus team based in Seattle, studying the Moderna vaccine, one of the two COVID-19 vaccines shown to be effective by more than 90 percent. Corbett started her work in January 2020 when researchers first learned how infectious and contagious COVID-19 was and how easily it can be spread. The team was formed to develop a safe and effective vaccine with Dr. Corbett leading the charge. She has nearly 10 years of research experience that entails exposing viral pathogenesis and host immunity as they pertain to vaccine development. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, with a secondary major in Sociology in 2008. She also obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2014. Dr. Corbett, a black woman from North Carolina, will go down in history for leading the effort to solve the COVID-19 pandemic.
