Protagonist Willis Wu, a Taiwanese-American actor, dreams of being cast in the leading role of kung fu master, rather than playing one-dimensional background characters on TV and often feels stuck in the roles that Hollywood and American culture have created for Asian-Americans. Through Wu’s character, the novel gives a complete storyline to a background character and gives insight to his experiences, examining themes of xenophobia, racism, national identity, pop culture, and assimilation. Published in 2020, this book was a New York Times best seller and won the National Book Award for Fiction that year.
