Press Release Banner

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is mobilizing full operations for a snowstorm expected to impact the region beginning Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

Weather Advisory

A winter storm will bring snow and mixed precipitation from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, with accumulations of 3-5 inches, possibly up to 8 inches in northern areas. The heaviest snowfall, up to 1 inch per hour, is expected to occur Tuesday night, with impactful precipitation ending between 7-9 AM on Wednesday. Southern areas will see wetter snow, while northern areas will have drier, fluffier snow. Mixed precipitation is expected Wednesday morning before turning into cold rain as temperatures rise to 35-37°F.

DPW&T Operational Plan

Brining operations on primary and secondary routes began on Sunday, February 9. DPW&T will pretreat known critical areas, including bridges, steep hills, cold spots, and other challenging residential locations.  This will continue throughout the day on Monday, February 10.

DPW&T will run a Full Snow Operation beginning Tuesday morning, February 11, deploying plows, salt trucks, and other necessary equipment, adjusting as needed to maintain clear and passable roadways. Heavy equipment will also be deployed to specifically address cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets. DPW&T will monitor weather conditions throughout the storm and dispatch additional resources as needed. Crews will continue to salt and/or plow during and after the winter weather event.

Route Prioritization During Winter Events

During snow events, routes are prioritized for service by the following categories: primary, secondary, and residential. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first to ensure public safety and emergency vehicles are able to travel safely. Once these routes are cleared, crews will focus on residential streets to ensure neighborhood access.

What Residents Can Do

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
  • Park in driveways or other off-road locations whenever possible to ensure accessibility for snowplows.
  • Shovel sidewalks abutting single family homes and businesses, as required by the County Code/Abutter’s Ordinance.
  • Report hazardous conditions such as downed trees or icy patches by calling PGC311.
  • Stay updated on weather forecasts and DPW&T’s operations through dpwt.mypgc.us or @PGCountyDPWT

Transportation

TheBus will operate as scheduled on Tuesday, with DPW&T monitoring route conditions and making service adjustments as needed.
