Helping Federal Workers Bounce Back: Federal Employee Career Transition & Resource Fair

LARGO, MD – In light of the recent layoffs affecting federal employees and federal contractors, Prince George’s County Executive’s Office and Employ Prince George’s, in collaboration with key partners, Prince George’s County Office of Human Resources Management, and the Prince George’s County Workforce Development Board, is hosting a pivotal event to provide much-needed support and resources to Prince George’s County residents impacted. The Federal Employee Career Transition & Resource Fair scheduled for 10:00 AM EST on March 12, 2025, at The Hotel at the University of Maryland, promises to be a beacon of hope for individuals navigating career changes in the wake of significant federal government cutbacks.
"I am deeply committed to helping our federal workforce bounce back. As a community inextricably linked to the federal government, we all know someone affected by these layoffs,” said Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson. “This job fair is a vital step in providing the resources, support, and opportunities that federal employees need to navigate this challenging period and secure a brighter future."
Walter Simmons, President and CEO, Employ Prince George’s, expressed the significance of the event, emphasizing, "In times of uncertainty, it is crucial to offer tailored resources and guidance to federal employees and federal contractors seeking to transition into new opportunities. Our goal is to empower attendees with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to explore diverse career paths and network effectively with potential employers and agency experts with immediate hiring needs."
Locally, numerous federal government employees, including both new hires and seasoned workers, have faced termination. Notably, probationary employees, those with less than a year of service and lacking civil service protection, have been subject to extensive layoffs. The impact of these actions has the potential to affect thousands of Prince George’s County residents.
Given that Prince George’s County is home to a substantial population of federal workers, with over 40,000 residents employed in federal government roles, Employ Prince George’s recognizes the financial and emotional strain that job losses can bring to the community. As part of the event, attendees will have access to a range of resources, including rental assistance, mental healthcare, social services, job training, and small business development, to help them navigate these challenging times effectively.
"Employ Prince George’s delivers critical services and helps solve difficult problems. We were dedicated to aiding individuals during the COVID-19 employment crisis, assisting thousands of residents in regaining employment and providing assistance to many residents in need. Today, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a wealth of resources to support federal employees during these challenging times," expressed Simmons.
By uniting federal workers, contractors, and affected residents, this transformative fair aims to provide personalized career counseling, networking opportunities, and connections with various employers, municipalities, Prince George’s County agencies, State of Maryland agencies, and private sector employers. The event will offer a platform for individuals to engage with stakeholders, gain insights from esteemed guest speakers and embark on a transformative journey towards career renewal and growth.
