Implementing a Juvenile Curfew at the National Harbor

For the past several months, my Administration has been actively engaged with community partners and businesses to better understand the public safety concerns, needs, and experiences of the National Harbor Community. We’ve heard numerous reports of large gatherings of unaccompanied minors in the community engaging in vandalism, theft, and other criminal behavior. These incidents not only impact the quality of life for residents and visitors but also pose a threat to businesses. Creating an unsafe working environment for the over 12,000 people employed at the national harbor, all of whom are a special part of our County.

Addressing Growing Concerns

To address these concerns, I am declaring an Executive Order beginning Friday, April 26 at 5 PM, to implement a juvenile curfew at National Harbor. Anyone 16 years old and younger without supervision must be off the property between 5 PM and 6 AM on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

While these measures may seem strict, they are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone at the National Harbor. The National Harbor is an area that we all enjoy, but it is a business. It is not a daycare, and it is not a playground.

Taking Action to Protect Our Community

It's important to note that this curfew will be in affect while legislation is being proposed in the County Council. That legislation will allow commercial property owners the ability to request zoning with permanent juvenile curfews. The executive order will be in place until this bill passes, and National Harbor applies to have a curfew zone in effect.

This issue is not just about enforcement; it's also about accountability. Parents and guardians play a crucial role in ensuring their children are not only safe but also responsible members of our community. Leaving children unsupervised at National Harbor is not acceptable, and there will be consequences for those who do so.

Investing in Our Youth

We are working closely with the Prince George's County Police Department and local businesses to not only enforce this curfew but also highlight our Youth Programs across the County. We are constantly developing new programs to engage and empower our youth, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to succeed.
