LARGO, MD – Today, Prince George’s County marked a major milestone in its economic development efforts with the official groundbreaking of Civic Plaza at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building (WKC), the first of five signature projects in the County’s Blue Line Corridor (BLC) revitalization strategy. The new public space is set to open in December 2025.

Led by Acting County Executive Tara H. Jackson, the ceremony brought together partners including U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks as well as the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), and other key project contributors to celebrate the start of construction on this transformative civic space.

“This plaza is more than just a construction site - it’s a manifestation of our vision to create a vibrant, inclusive, and walkable Largo,” said Acting County Executive Jackson. “It reflects everything we believe in - connection, culture, and community. As it comes to life, the Civic Plaza will be a place where families gather, businesses thrive, and Prince Georgians come together to celebrate all that makes our County special.”

The Civic Plaza at WKC is the County’s first-ever project in partnership with MSA, made possible through State BLC funding and years of vision and planning under the leadership of former County Executive, now U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks.

“When we began envisioning the Blue Line Corridor, our goal was to make Prince George’s County a destination for visitors, and a community with amenities that made the area even more enjoyable for residents,” said Senator Angela Alsobrooks. “This groundbreaking is a celebration of what happens when we dream big and move together towards it with purpose, and we are excited to see this vision come to fruition.”

The Civic Plaza at WKC will serve as a multi-use, flexible community destination - a space designed through extensive public engagement to meet the daily needs of residents and the aspirations of the broader County. In 2024, residents participated in a series of interactive design workshops, hosted by the Mayson-Dixon Group, Design Collective, and MSA, where they helped shape the space’s vision and features.

Features of Civic Plaza at WKC will include:

  • A prominent lawn and stage area for large community events
  • A playground designed for young children
  • An outdoor game area and art walk with seating
  • A butterfly garden
  • An enclosed dog park
  • Flexible space to support everything from casual visits to large-scale festivals

The space is being developed with the intention of daily, weekly, and annual use, creating an energetic hub of public life in the heart of downtown Largo. It will also serve as a tribute to the County’s cultural legacy, located in the shadow of the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building, named after Prince George’s County’s first Black County Executive.

“As we break ground, we are honoring both our history and our future,” Jackson added. “We honor Wayne K. Curry’s vision, we recognize Senator Alsobrooks’ transformative leadership, and we celebrate the people of Prince George’s County who brought this plaza to life with their ideas and advocacy.”

The Civic Plaza at WKC is one of five signature developments along the Blue Line Corridor, a County-led strategy to stimulate inclusive economic growth, enhance public infrastructure, and create dynamic, transit-oriented communities.

“During the 2022 legislative session, the General Assembly authorized the Maryland Stadium Authority to issue $400 million in bonds to finance the planning, design, and construction of Prince George’s County Blue Line Corridor sports, entertainment, and public assembly facilities,” said MSA Executive Director Michael J. Frenz. “When completed, the Blue Line Corridor is expected to inspire further economic development, increase tourism and provide enjoyment, enrichment, education, and business opportunities for Marylanders. MSA looks forward to our continued collaboration with Prince George’s County on this game-changing endeavor.”

Project partners include:

  • Maryland Stadium Authority – State funding and project oversight
  • J. Vinton Schafer Construction – General Contractor
  • Design Collective – Design Sub-Contractor
  • Mayson-Dixon Group – Community Engagement and Communications
  • HR&A Advisors – Economic Development Strategy
  • M-NCPPC – Long-term site operator through a future Use Agreement

The plaza is currently undergoing a naming selection process, and community members are encouraged to remain engaged in shaping its future, including participating in interim activations and public naming events in the months ahead.
