Prince George's County Executive Outlines FY2025 Budget Priorities
Facing a Projected Deficit Head On
Creating an annual budget is a complex process that requires careful consideration of needs. This year, we’ve only experienced a 1% increase in our total budget, so we are facing a projected deficit of $171 million. This is due to various factors, including inflation, rising costs, and a decline in revenue sources for the County.
To address this deficit, we have had to make some tough decisions. We have frozen over 800 County positions and made cuts to every County agency except for Public Safety and the Prince George's County Public School System (PGCPS). While some programs and initiatives will face reductions, we have worked diligently to protect key services that our residents depend on.
Committed to Delivering for Prince Georgians
Despite these challenges, we remain committed to our Proud Priorities, which include Education, Youth Development, Quality of Life Supported by High-Performance Government, Economic Development, Healthy Communities, and Safe Neighborhoods. These priorities represent our commitment to building and maintaining a 21st-century County government infrastructure that meets the holistic needs of Prince Georgians.
Education continues to be a top priority for my administration. We are allocating 62% of the FY 2025 Proposed General Fund Budget, totaling $2,829.4 Million, towards education. This includes building new schools, fulfilling budget commitments to the operation budget of PGCPS, and other improvements for staff and students.
In addition to education, we are making key investments in areas such as public safety, economic development, and healthcare. We are increasing funding for the Prince George's County Police Department, Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the challenges we face, there is reason to be optimistic about the future of Prince George's County. The pandemic created historic change, in Prince George’s County one of those changes was a reduction in income tax revenue, but as I mentioned we’re seeing that revenue begin to grow again, and it’s a sign that our local economy remains strong.”

Closing the Gap
We are also investing in economic development initiatives to reduce the tax burden on residents by increasing the commercial tax base. Fortunately, a lot of our hard work on economic development really paid off when we secured the future site of the FBI headquarters in Greenbelt. This project, along with all the others we have across the County, will create once-in-a-generation economic opportunities. Having already made significant progress through strategic investments in areas such as education, public safety, economic development, and healthcare, we remain committed to serving our residents and ensuring that Prince George's County continues to grow and thrive.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in this budget process. Your input and hard work are greatly appreciated. Throughout my administration, we've prioritized meeting the needs of Prince Georgians while striving to grow our economy and develop more culturally and amenity-rich communities. Together we'll continue that progress and continue to see our County grow and thrive.
