Senior Property Tax Credit Bill Update
Dear Prince Georgians,
As you may know, our County Council has been working to establish a Senior Property Tax Credit Bill to better support our seniors. Today, we are pleased to share that my administration has been working collaboratively with the Council to refine and improve upon the goals outlined in the Senior Property Tax Credit Bill, CB-007-2024 (DR2), which was passed by Council in November.
While the bill reflects important intentions, we collectively recognize the need for revisions to ensure its clarity, fiscal responsibility, and ease of implementation. To ensure that this legislation best meets the needs of our seniors, we are working together to draft a new bill that prioritizes:
- Ensuring seniors understand how to access the credit and meet eligibility requirements
- Streamlining the process to make it easier for applicants and officials
- Balancing the goal of supporting seniors with the financial sustainability of the program
- Equitable access for our senior residents who need assistance the most
As part of this process, we will submit a Joint Resolution to suspend CB-007-2024 (DR2) while the revised legislation is being finalized. Improved legislation will be introduced at the beginning of the 2025 Council legislative session.
This effort underscores our shared dedication to developing solutions that best serve Prince Georgians. We remain committed to working together to ensure the well-being and support of our senior community.
In addition, we would also like to encourage residents to mark your calendars for the Special Election to select our next County Executive. The Special Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, 2025, followed by the Special General Election on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. These important elections provide an opportunity for residents to shape the future leadership of our county. Visit the Board of Elections website to stay tuned for more information on voter registration, early voting, and polling locations to ensure your voice is heard.
Yours in service,
Tara H. Jackson
Acting Prince George’s County Executive
