Hot Weather Safety Tips for Pets
Steamy days of summer can be dangerous for your four-legged pets
LARGO, MD – Excessive high temperatures can harm humans and furry companions. The Prince George’s County Animal Control Ordinance Section 3-180, titled "Animal Cruelty and Neglect," says all domestic animals except livestock are prohibited from being kept outdoors when the heat index is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, as determined by the National Weather Service. Any person who inflicts unnecessary suffering or pain upon an animal may be charged by Subsection (b) provisions. To view a copy of the Animal Control Ordinance, visit bit.ly/pgcanimalcontrolcode.
You can take a few precautions to help keep your pet safe and cool during the dog days of summer:
- It is against the law in Maryland to leave a pet in an unattended vehicle, even if the air conditioning is running. Overheating can kill an animal; NEVER leave your pet alone in a car, even with open windows.
- When the temperature and humidity are very high, be careful of your pet’s paw pads lingering on hot asphalt, which can quickly burn them.
- Be sure to protect pets from heat and sun and give them plenty of fresh, cold water. Tree shade and tarps are good resources and don't obstruct airflow. A doghouse can trap heat and may make it worse for a dog.
- Consider cutting your pet's hair to one-inch length in the summer to help prevent overheating. Also, brush your cat more than usual to prevent problems caused by high heat.
- Exercise your pet in the cool of the early morning or evening. If you’re planning outdoor activities with your pet, remember to carry extra water and a container to drink from.
- Take special precautions with old or overweight animals or those with heart or lung diseases. Snub-nosed dogs (Bulldog, Pekingese, Boston Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Pugs, Shih Tzu, etc.) have compromised respiratory systems and should be kept in air conditioning when possible.
- If you notice your pets overheating, excessive panting, difficulty breathing, or an increased heart and respiratory rate, get help from your veterinarian immediately.

to Reopen on June 14
Owner-surrender appointments remain temporarily suspended
The Prince George’s County Animals Services Facility and Adoption Center (ASFAC) will reopen and resume dog adoptions and applications on Friday, June 14, after a temporary closure due to a respiratory disease. Owner surrender appointments will remain suspended until further notice. This measure is necessary to mitigate the risk of introducing new animals into our environment while ASFAC manages the aftermath of the recent outbreak.
To help reduce the spread of the disease in the community, ASFAC encourages pet owners to keep their pets updated on vaccines, avoid communal water bowls, and seek medical advice from a veterinarian if any symptoms like a cough or runny nose develop or worsen.
If the pet must find a new home, consider rehoming it with family and friends or contact one of our County-approved rescue organizations to see if they can accept your pet.

Getting the animals out of the facility and into homes is critical to getting them in the best position to succeed in the long term. Releasing treated animals after the appropriate period does not pose a health threat to the community.

The ASFAC has a large group of kitten-bottle babies that will be legally adoptable once they are eight weeks old. They need fosters to take them in for two to four weeks. Most of the infant kittens can eat solid food. Interested fosters can contact fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us for more information.
Upcoming Volunteer Orientations
Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 10 a.m.
We are looking for volunteers to help walk and socialize dogs, play with cats, assist with feeding animals, cleaning, office work, off-site events, and more! Volunteers must be 18 or older to work directly with the animals.
Walk-ins welcomed. Please arrive on time.

Pet Parenting Classes
The next workshop is on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at noon.
Learn what it takes to be a responsible pet owner and a great family host to a four-legged friend for a lifetime. This one-hour presentation, including a question-and-answer session (Q&A), will cover time, cost, food, toys, medical, safety, and social issues associated with a pet.
Classes will meet the first Saturday of each month at noon throughout 2024!

Rabbit Handling and Care Class
This hour-long class will cover the handling and care of rabbits, diet, how to clean enclosures and more for anyone interested in adopting rabbits/bunnies.
