Capitol Heights Zip Code: 20743

The Prince George’s County Animal Services Division (ASD) applied for and received a grant from the Maryland Department of Agriculture to spay/neuter 240 feral cats in the 20743 zip code and to also vaccinate them against rabies, in an effort to humanely reduce their overall numbers. The cats will have the top of their left ears tipped during surgery, which indicates that they have been altered and received a rabies vaccination. This is a TNVR project (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return), so the cats will be returned to the area where they were trapped after surgery. ASD is not trapping cats for purposes of the grant. Instead, we are working in partnership with PG Cats (the TNR group that serves the Capitol Heights area), who will coordinate trapping efforts.

Anyone wishing to assist with trapping only for the purposes of spay/neuter under the grant can send an e-mail to PG Cats at nsstine@msn.com. In particular, PG Cats is looking to hear from those feeding and caring for the cats, and can also offer advice to mitigate any complaints or concerns. Contact information of caretakers and those willing to assist with trapping is confidential and will NOT be passed on to ASD. We are looking to alter as many cats as possible in the next few months, before the weather warms up and the cats start reproducing.

Those interested in having feral cats altered can borrow humane traps at no cost from the cat trap bank at the Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center (ASFAC) by contacting ASD Rescue Coordinator LeAnn Parker at 301-780-7200 or e-mail LKParker@co.pg.md.us . Appointments for surgery under the grant can be made by contacting The Spay Spot at 301-254-8151. They are the low-cost spay/neuter clinic located within the ASFAC. The Spay Spot is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They are closed on government holidays. Drop-off time for animals scheduled for surgery is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.; pick-up is prior to 2:00 p.m. Please be sure to schedule surgeries and mention the grant in advance to ensure a spot on the surgery schedule.
