Prince George’s County Announces Earlier Waste Collection Services
Due to Excessive Heat
Workers facing extreme heat challenges will begin trash and recycling collections at 5 a.m.

Largo, MD—With temperatures rising and expected to remain high throughout the coming weeks, the Department of the Environment (DoE) has adjusted its waste collection hours. Beginning Monday, July 15, through Monday, September 30, residents are asked to place their trash and recycling carts at the curb by 5 a.m. on their regular collection day. This time adjustment is for workers' safety to avoid waste collection during the hottest times of the day. Residents should note that services may be delayed throughout the day while workers navigate the high temperatures.

“The first week of transitioning to our new waste collection services has been challenging for workers as we consolidated service routes and had to slide two days of collections due to the holiday,” says DoE Director Andrea Crooms. “We ask residents to remain patient while our workers continue to provide services in these excessive heat-related conditions as their health and safety are paramount.”

Residents should be assured that all missed collections will be serviced promptly and that they should leave their items at the curb once an online missed collection is reported through PGC311.

In May, the County announced the expansion of its Clear the Curb waste collection services to include a new monthly electronics recycling and scrap metal collection, an increase in bulky trash items placed curbside from two to four, and a new collection service date for some residents. The County sent out multiple mailers with the information, provided a link to an online waste collection lookup tool, and held a virtual meeting about the transition.

Residents who missed the virtual meeting on the County's new waste collection services can watch the recorded session on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0KReH5KacM.
