Labeling Requirements

What Are the Requirements for Serving Homemade Baked Goods & Other Cottage Foods?
Each item must be individually wrapped before it leaves the home. Individual plastic bags or plastic wrap is acceptable. A label must be present on each package that has the following information:
  • Name and address of the cottage food business
  • Name of the product
  • Ingredients of the product in descending order by weight, net weight or volume of the product
  • Allergen information as specified by federal labeling requirements.
Include on Label
The label must also state in 10 point or larger type, “Made by a cottage food business that is not subject to Maryland’s food safety regulations.” See sample label below.

123 Main Street, Anytown, MD
Chocolate Chip Brownie 4.2 oz
Ingredients: sugar, flour, cocoa powder, oil, eggs, vanilla, baking soda, salt.
Allergens: eggs, gluten. May contain tree nuts.
*Made by a cottage food business that is not subject to Maryland's food safety regulations.

Nutritional Information
